Sacrificing virgins, be-headings at the top of the temple to the gods, throwing the chosen ones into a volcano. These were all forms of human sacrifice for the good of the community. Given the current Covid-19 pandemic, should we revert to human sacrifices? Is this what it will take to rid ourselves of this terrible scourge? My answer is yes. But how will we accomplish this?
Two weeks, 30 days, 3 months. When will the apex of the curve occur? We are being asked to isolate in place, employ social distancing, and wash your hands frequently. However, we don’t have a coordinated, unified effort in our country to require folks to observe the governmental orders and recommendations from our infectious disease experts. We don’t know how long it will take to “flatten the curve”. This is where human sacrifice comes into play. We all need to adopt an unselfish attitude and embrace these necessary sacrifices and restrictions in our daily lives. You need to ask yourself, “Can I do this for the good of my family, neighbors, city, and country?”
The young seem to be disregarding the call to arms to self-isolate. Their caviler attitude and reckless behavior needs to be put in check. But it is going to be hard to convince a generation that is used to immediate gratification. They don’t understand the concept of having to wait to get what they desire. They are self-centered and don’t seem to be accountable for their actions. We as parents have encouraged this by wanting our children to have a better life than we did. We want to provide for their wants and needs, often raising our credit card debt for those items that we really can’t afford at the time of purchase. We’ve raised our kids with a lack of discipline. Well, now is the time to coach our children to isolate for their benefit, and most importantly for the good of society and our future. We need to have them embrace self-isolation and social distancing. We need to set an example. We need to “Walk the Talk”.
So let’s embrace these sacrifices that are required to fight the spread of this deadly disease. Adopt an attitude of selflessness. Put the good of the country ahead of your own needs. Let’s do it for as long as it takes to stop the spread. It is necessary. It is required if we want to get back to normal. Join the cause. Stay committed. Be disciplined. Sacrifice.
Stay Happy and Healthy!
